My Boys

I was doing so well at posting and then...well the school closed and my life changed, somewhat.

First things first. The janitors at my school when on strike, meaning they weren't around to clean the school. We did what we could to keep the mess to a minimum but it was bound to be closed. In the mean time I am suppose to be getting some school work done, but how can I learn anything that way, it's simple, I CAN'T.

But my 'life as a college student' has somewhat improved, as in I am almost broke from going out drinking with my friends, and generally having a good time.

My 'boys' are going through ups and downs, they've clinched the playoffs and should end up first or second overall in their league. But haven't been winning at home, which disappoints me. Not that I am making excuses(because I really don't think I have to) but last game we hit a pretty low point and here's why.

It was pegged to be the biggest game for the Slammers they played the top ranked team in the other division. It had all the makings of a playoff game, but the momentum was quickly changed when less than two minutes into the game one of the Slammers top defensemen was struck in the throat by the puck. He managed to skate to the bench before collapsing on the ground. Play continued with great speed as out d-man laid on the ground shaking and spitting up blood. I wanted to badly to watch him, but couldn't bring myself to stare. Our coach finally got the refs to blow the whistle and stop play. That's when the rest of the boys made their way over to see their team mate on the ground and likely turning a dark shade of blue. They removed his skates and found the doctor that was in attendance, it was rumoured that he may need a tracheotomy, that would cut a hole in his throat to allow him to breath. I don't know how much time passed for I was in shock, how could this happen to him, one of the nicest funniest guys on the team. Not to mention the fact that he was just getting back from an injury that caused him to miss at least three weeks of play. He left the rink on a stretcher and I didn't see his face, which I am sort of glad for, I don't think I would have been able to contain the tears. One of the players what was sitting out of that game came over and talked to me after he saw his team mate leave the rink, he told me that he was as purple as my jacket. I asked him to keep my updated on how he was doing. And the game resumed play. It was as intense as we thought it would be. The first goal came midway through the first, by an unlikely goal scorer, which brought the fans to their feet. Less then a two minutes later the other team, but with less then a minute left in the period our injured defensemen sought revenge against the opposition and score his first of the night. They ended the period with the lead, but it was taken from them just minutes into the 2nd. The boys didn't give up but the other team scored their third minutes after their second. We managed to get the third goal and started the 3rd period tied but the opposing team scored three more for the win(6-3 was the final). ..I forgot to mention that the boys had another close call when our goalie took a shot off the shoulder/neck area and didn't get up right away. He ended up being ok and playing the rest of the game but it was another tense moment.

I'm not the coach so I don't know how they can get on the right track again, but they need to do something. They are pissing away leads and wins, and they know they are better then they have been since the Christmas break. They need to step up and put this regular season away! I'm hoping for wins and momentum in our favor before the playoffs, cuz it's just going to get that much more intense. I haven't given up on them, nor will I give up on them. So I say "GO BOYS!! GO!!" make me proud, even though you already do.

p.s. out D-man spent the night in hospital and was re-evaluated the next day after the swelling went down. He was even at the rink the next day. And I was told that he might play the Sunday game, which ended up getting cancelled due to the weather. But I hope I get to see him out on the ice tomorrow as I am hitting the road to see the guys in an away game!
